If you’re pre-planning your funeral arrangements, or you’re arranging a funeral for someone you’ve recently lost, you may be confused about your burial monument options. Luckily, our blog is here to explain the differences between your funeral memorial options so that you can make the best decision. To find out more, keep on reading.
Different Memorial Types
These are some of the most common memorial types you may encounter, and we’ve explained each one to help you make the most informed decision.
Headstones & Gravestones
Headstones and gravestones are often used interchangeably, marking the spot where your loved one has been buried. They are very common forms of memorials, typically made from granite or another type of rock. They sit erect on the ground, and can be customised with an inscription or engraving to commemorate your loved one. Headstones can be less ornate than monuments and are often smaller.
Monuments
Monuments are larger than headstones, marking the burial of your loved one. They can be the same shape and sometimes sit upright in the same way as a headstone, but on a larger scale. Monuments can also take on different shapes and styles, such as angels, lions or military monuments. Depending on the cemetery, you may have a height limit or restriction, but you should be able to create any memorial design you choose for your loved one.
Markers
You may have seen markers before, as they are the flat memorial options you might have seen in cemeteries. They are usually placed by the grave of a loved one, and can usually be seen when standing directly above. Markers can also be engraved with information or a custom inscription for a lower price than a headstone or a monument.
Urns
In the case that your loved one hasn’t been buried, they may be cremated, in which case you will have ashes. Urns are typically where ashes are kept after someone has been cremated, and they come in a range of shapes and designs. Your loved one may have specified about an urn already, and you can choose a design that reflects them.
For cremations, your loved one might have discussed their wishes regarding their ashes with you, and many families choose to scatter ashes in a given location. This is a common type of memorial that takes place and ashes can be spread in any location, or a place that has a significant meaning.
