How to choose the perfect headstone

Updated: Nov 8, 2023

Choosing a headstone for a loved one’s grave can be a difficult process. It’s your chance to memorialise that special person, however, and you can make certain that it is something special. Often, memorial companies provide a sample of their options so you can select something that you like, but you can also have bespoke headstones made.

What should you consider when selecting the perfect headstone?

Materials

What will the headstone be made of? Stone is a common choice and there are many different types of stone. It’s natural and long lasting, so it is a good choice for many. However, you can also look at metal or concrete memorials. These can be long lasting, too, though concrete tends to deteriorate over time and metal may corrode.

The material used may be dictated by the cemetery and what they allow. However, you should select something that is not only permitted, but reminds you of the deceased.

Size

When it comes to size, this is often limited only by budget and cemetery rules. You may wish to have something small and delicate, or you could opt for a bolder statement piece that will stand proudly to show where your loved one lies. Again, this will depend on your own taste and how much you can pay.

Design

One of the most important parts of the headstone selection is the shape and design. Consider what you want to achieve. Are you looking for something staid and bold? Or do you prefer something softer and more delicate? Do you want a simple design or something carved, like an angel? Will you set a photo into the headstone or simply engrave it?

For some people, adding a design to the headstone can be a way to remember that special someone. As an example, many children’s headstones feature an angel guarding the child. Others have a cross on the stone. You may choose a rectangular headstone or a rounded one, one with ledges or a frame, or a simple, flat stone. The choice is yours.

Wording

Finally, the wording you choose to engrave will be your lasting memorial for the deceased. At the very least, their name and date of birth and date of death should be recorded. However, you can add other words, too. Commonly used options include:

- A quote from a famous person

- A trademark phrase from the deceased

- A Bible verse

- A poem

- Their achievements in life

- A line about the person’s life

- Their status as a son, daughter, spouse, or sibling

- A phrase to remember them by

These are all valid choices and you can also leave just the basics if you prefer. The idea is to leave a lasting memory of this person who lit up the world.
