When planning memorials, there is a lot to consider. Whether you are opting for traditional memorials, modern memorials or something entirely different. When planning a memorial, it’s important to understand what grave settling is and how it can be managed. We’ve put together this blog to help you understand everything you need to know about grave settling.

What is grave settling?

Grave settling is a natural process whereby the earth surrounding a burial site compacts over time. Initially, when the grave is dug, the soil is loose and may contain air pockets. Over time, the soil will settle and these pockets will be eliminated which can lead to the ground sinking slightly. This can happen over months or even years after a burial, depending on a range of factors including soil composition, weather conditions and the type of casket used.

Why does this happen?

There are several reasons why grave settling can happen. Firstly, the primary cause is that the composition of organic matter within the soil including the remains of the deceased and any wood components of the casket creates voids in the soil. As the materials break down, the ground can gradually collapse over time. There are also additional factors such as rainfall, temperature fluctuations and soil type which can accelerate the process.

How does this affect memorials?

The issue with grave settling is that it can alter the placement of the memorial. If a memorial is installed too soon after the burial, the ground around it can become uneven and unstable as it continues to settle. This can lead to the memorial sinking or leaning which can look bad and compromise the structural integrity. Grave settling can also cause memorials to become displaced or damaged.

How long should you wait to install a memorial?

Because it is quite common for grave settling to impact the memorial, it is recommended to wait before installing it. You should wait sufficient time for the ground around the grave to become compact and stable to reduce the chances of an unstable memorial. The location of the memorial will impact the time you should wait, but it typically ranges from six months to a year after burial.
