It is always a tragic occasion when a loved one dies. Your mind is busy trying to mourn, but you also have to begin thinking about big details like organising a funeral. In this trying time, it is sometimes easy for things to slip through the gaps that need doing.
Here are some things people forget to do after somebody dies.
Medical Certificate & Death Registry
The first two things you need to do when somebody dies are obtain a medical certificate and register their death. If they die in a hospital, the hospital can give you a certificate, while if they die at home you should ring their GP. You should then register their death by contacting the Register Office.
Notifying People
While you will have already told friends and family about the death, there are plenty of others who need contacting. If they are renting a home you need to tell the landlord, and you should also contact the council, mortgage providers, employers and utility providers if applicable.
You’ll also need to notify a few government departments. HMRC and the Department for Work and Pensions will need contacting about their taxes and any pensions. You also need to contact the passport office and DVLA to cancel their passport and driving licence. You will have to return the licence and passport to the respective agencies.
Cancel Contracts
Your loved one will probably have a few contracts set up that will need cancelling. This could be the internet, phones, magazines or any other subscription-based service they use.
Grave Monuments & Headstones
While the details of a funeral are often thought about plenty, the final resting place memorial can sometimes be overlooked. This is a marker that will forever identify your loved one, so you want to ensure you work with a company that will provide you one that you love.
